Radio Sonar
Solent University's Student Radio Station
I was part of Radio Sonar, my university’s radio station, for two years during my second and third year at university. Radio has always been something I have really enjoyed about my course, so it was fun being able to work on this outside of my assignments. I had a show with three of my course mates, called MMJ (Multimedia Journalism) Gals.

MMJ Gals focused on Entertainment news and gossip. We played a range of music, but mostly music in the Pop genre. Every week we would plan our show to make sure we could fill a full two hours (or one hour) with high quality content. We improved on this greatly over the two years. We split our shows into sections and had a schedule. My presenting skills have improved since becoming part of Radio Sonar as it gave me the opportunity to practise presenting an entertainment show as well as presenting a news bulletin.

MMJ Gals won the ‘Best Social Media Profile’ award last year. We decided to create a Twitter page so we could communicate with our readers. This meant we could let them know when we were going live, and we could communicate with them throughout the show as well. I created our profile picture and header on Twitter to make the account personal. I decided to use our bitmoji’s which is a cartoon version of ourselves. I edited these onto a lilac background to link into the Radio Sonar colours.
Have a listen at some of our content!

“In her time at Radio Sonar, Hannah Watkins has been a massive asset to the society. Regularly presenting and producing an entertainment show to a very high standard, she has really grown as a content maker in her time involved with the station.
Her show has even won awards such as 'Best Social Media' which really highlights the hard work put in to create the strongest content for her audience and I believe is a clear demonstration of the high standard Hannah holds herself too. She has also been involved in a bunch of our charity projects taking time out of her busy 3rd year schedule to commit to supporting our 24 hour broadcast.”
