Channel 5 News
News programme of British broadcaster Channel 5 produced by ITN
During my week at 5 News, I completed various tasks such as interviewing experts, researching for the producers, as well as helping the planning desk. I shadowed reporters and camera operators.
I was tasked with doing five different interviews, sometimes with just half an hour notice. I made sure I researched the story and the person I was interviewing before I met them at reception, and walked with them to the various locations where I met with the camera operator. To get further information on the stories, I logged into iNEWS.
For some stories, I contacted the reporter to check with them what angle they wanted me to take, then planned questions and organised a good location for certain interviews with the camera operators. This was very rewarding when I saw my interviews go out live on 5 News as it made me feel part of the team and that I was contributing to the bulletin. It was reassuring to know that they trusted me with these interviews on my own.

I helped film some content, which meant I featured in the headlines of the show!
I shadowed reporters and camera operators on stories such as The Pub of the Year award and coronavirus. It was a good chance to see how they conduct interviews and film these. Shadowing them editing on Avid NewsCutter on the road was a good experience to see the difference between Avid and other editing softwares.

I also was tasked with taking the LiveU from the garage to meet the camera operator and reporter in Euston so we could set up the live at the train station. It was a good experience to see how a live is carried out, and see the similarities and differences between 5 News and ITV Meridian. I was also able to listen to everyone back in the gallery over the phone to hear the communication.

“Hannah was a pleasure to have in the 5 News newsroom. She was incredibly proactive and learned quickly. We gave her a variety of different tasks such as interviewing experts and contributors, helping with research for output producers, the news desk and planning, and going out filming with crews and correspondents.

I had lots of great feedback from various parts of the news operation which is always a great sign of how well someone is doing and how well they're fitting in. Hannah has a fantastic attitude and sunny disposition which I'm sure will serve her well in a future journalistic career.”
