BJTC Elections Reporter

Instead of attending one of my news days at university, I worked overnight at the 2019 General Election on the 12th December in Eastleigh. This was a great new experience for me that was really worth doing. I was a BJTC (Broadcast Journalism Training Council) Reporter, working alongside BBC South and ITV Meridian. It was nice to see some familiar faces, because I got to see an ITV Meridian Camera Operator who I had met earlier on in the year at the Southampton Marathon.

One of the highlights of the night was interviewing Paul Holmes who was elected as Member of Parliament for Eastleigh at the election. After BBC and ITV had taken their video interviews, I got the chance to speak to him and recorded an audio interview. I had instructions to email any content onto Global, which I did, and was pleased to find out my interview was used on Heart Radio and Capital Radio.

Throughout the night, we updated a thread on Twitter with information about the Eastleigh count. Our first video, introducing ourselves got over 1000 views. As we were working with the BJTC, we made sure to tag them in our tweets and to use the hashtag. This meant they could see the updates and retweet them when necessary. This was a good way to stay in contact with our followers and to update them from beginning to end.

We also did a few Skype video interviews where we went live with other student stations around the UK. My number was given out to the stations so when they needed a live update from Eastleigh, I was there to provide them with a quick live update on air.
